Google's Adsense ProgramAdsense is Google's program that allows web site publishers to participate in the income from Google's Adwords program by becoming part of the Google Content Network. It is also known as contextual advertising because the ads served by Google are determined by the content on the page that is the context of the ad code. So if you had a real estate investment web site, you would be served ads about real estate investment. Visitors to that site would click on the ads if they were interested in the products advertised. You will be paid either on a per click (PPC) basis or on an impression (CPM) basis. Most image ads are sold on a CPM (impression basis). Adsense For SearchAdSense for Search allows visitors to search Google.com or your sites (up to 3 domains). You earn money whenever they click on the ads that come up on the search results. If you click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox in the AdSense for Search settings, you won’t lose your visitors. You can AdSense for Search box on your website just to see what your users are looking for as Google allows you to look at the terms people have entered.. You could then create your own content for the top search terms, keeping your users on your site where you can serve them more ads. If a visitor clicks on an ad which shows on an Adsense for Search results page, you will be paid based on the advertiser's bid for the Google Search network, as opposed to their bid for the Google content network. This is a good thing. Adsense introduced the ability to display AdSense for search results in an IFRAME. Publishers can now embed their search results within their pages and customize the layout of the results page to match their sites. Non Content PagesNote that you can now put ad units on your error, login, registration, thank you and welcome pages. This is something that not a lot of Adsense publishers know about, because Google never bothered to update their Terms of Service (ToS). Relevant AdsOne complaint of new Adsense users is that the ads served aren't relevant to the topic of the pages on their site. The Google Mediapartners bot is how Adsense knows the type of ads to display. This bot is different to the Googlebot which crawls your site for indexing in Google's organic results. However the two do share results from cache resulting from their crawling. Google says that there is no influence on how your site is indexed in its organic search results by your participation in Adsense. That was from Kim Malone - Director of Online Sales & Operations for Google AdSense. Sometimes it takes time for Google to realize what the web site is about. But often, it is merely because the publisher just doesn't know how to optimize their site so that Google can figure out what the web site is about. If you learn some of the basic SEO techniques that Improve SEO is about, that will put you on your way. If your pages are about a diverse range of topics, as many forums are, then you may want to tell Google what text it should concentrate on in determining what type of ads to serve. To do this you should use Adsense section targeting. Getting irrelevant ads on first pageThe other pages are fine and on the local server it has relevant ads. I had this problem with a site of mine as well. I tried section targeting, changing the copy by removing misleading words, moving the copy higher in the home page and competitive filtering. None of it worked, only the passage of time. Perhaps Adsense initially uses the file name of the page or the folder name to decide what a page is about, and index.html just doesn't cut it. One user commented "If I put my index in a folder on the site it has the right ads". Only when the Adsense crawler arrives may it change. |
